Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services

About the position

The position involves providing professional technical support within allocated task resources, contributing to an overall increase in the efficiency of scientific support while achieving independent accomplishments. The role requires adherence to Quality Assurance Program Plans, Work or Test Plans, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and Health & Safety Plans. A critical aspect of the job is to thoroughly, consistently, and completely document all laboratory activities in specified notebooks, ensuring that all records are accurate and up to date. Maintaining laboratory spaces according to the criteria specified by Safety, Health, and Environmental Management is essential, as is evaluating laboratory safety procedures to ensure compliance with standards and making improvements as needed. The position also involves conferring with scientists or engineers to conduct analyses of research projects, interpret test results, or develop nonstandard tests. Responsibilities include preparing test solutions, compounds, or reagents for laboratory personnel to conduct tests, as well as the preparation, extraction, and analysis of target compounds from various environmental sample matrices and sampling equipment or media. This includes air sampling canisters, XAD, thermal desorption tubes, SPE cartridges, and filters. The preparation of sampling media prior to field deployment for sample collection is also a key responsibility, along with accurately documenting the preparation process. Analytical tasks include the analysis of sample preparations by techniques such as GC/MS, LC/MS, or other methods, and the reduction of sample data to report analytical results in a timely manner. Conducting quality control tests and evaluating them against data quality indicator goals is crucial, as is performing corrective actions as prescribed by QA and/or project management. The role requires maintaining laboratory instruments to ensure they are in proper working order and troubleshooting malfunctions when needed. Compiling and analyzing test information to determine process or equipment operating efficiency or to diagnose malfunctions is also part of the job. Communication of processes, results, and challenges to supervisors and the management team is essential. The position may also involve assisting in writing technical papers or reports, preparing standards and specifications for processes, facilities, products, or tests, and developing, improving, or customizing products, equipment, formulas, processes, or analytical methods. Additionally, recommending the purchase of laboratory supplies, such as chemicals, to maintain working inventory is expected.
