About the position

The Scientist position at American Water is a critical role that supports the company's mission of providing safe, clean, reliable, and affordable drinking water and wastewater services. This position is based at the Delran laboratory and also involves collaboration with the Camden headquarters. The Scientist will assist in solving complex problems as defined in the research goals related to American Water's business areas, primarily focusing on water research projects. This includes responsibilities such as water sample collection, chemical and microbiological analysis, and data evaluations. The role requires adherence to research standards and governance frameworks established by leadership, ensuring that all tasks are executed with precision and care. In this position, the Scientist will be responsible for using a variety of complex water quality analytical equipment and associated data processing components. They will execute tasks for research investigations, which may involve the design and implementation of sampling surveys, as well as bench- and pilot-scale testing. The Scientist will also contribute to the creation and maintenance of a research and innovation agenda that aligns with American Water's business needs. This includes contributing to research articles and papers relevant to their domain, thereby enhancing the company's knowledge base and operational effectiveness. The role emphasizes the importance of maintaining laboratory safety and quality assurance/control (QAQC) procedures. The Scientist will support the experimental design and development of project objectives, execute planning and scheduling for water quality research projects, and prepare samples according to established methods for chemical or microbiological analytes. They will develop and apply methodologies for analyzing water quality constituents, utilizing advanced data analytics, statistics, and machine learning techniques. Additionally, the Scientist will analyze and interpret water quality data, participate in project progress meetings, and assist in preparing technical information and major findings of research and innovation projects.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains laboratory safety and QAQC procedures.
  • Supports experimental design and development of project objectives.
  • Executes planning and scheduling for water quality research projects.
  • Prepares samples according to established methods for chemical or microbiological analytes.
  • Develops and applies methodology for water quality constituents using laboratory and online monitoring equipment, advanced data analytics/statistics, and machine learning.
  • Performs related duties within research studies such as purchasing laboratory supplies and preparing sampling kits and materials for analysis.
  • Analyzes and interprets water quality data through a detailed review.
  • Participates in project progress meetings by preparing written updates that include data visualization related to objectives and associated tasks.
  • Assists in preparing technical information and major findings of research and innovation projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific field (e.g., Environmental Science, Chemistry, Microbiology) or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in water quality analysis and research methodologies.
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety protocols and QAQC procedures.
  • Proficiency in using complex analytical equipment and data processing tools.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data sets.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for preparing reports and presentations.
