About the position

The Scrum Master II at Marriott is responsible for effectively managing the development sprints from planning through execution to review within an agile development environment. This role involves running daily scrums, collaborating on requirement documentation, and unblocking barriers to ensure the team remains productive. The Scrum Master will coach and collaborate with cross-functional teams, Product Owners, and other Scrum Masters to foster decision-making and continuous improvement. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership abilities and guide the development of agile capabilities within the Global Technology organization and across Marriott's portfolio of products. The position requires an expert-level understanding of SAFe Agile Scrum principles and practices, as well as an awareness of the unique opportunities and challenges associated with organizing, facilitating, and continuously aligning teams with the guiding business strategy. This specific role will support one or more of the Technology Workplace Products agile teams, ensuring that Scrum is understood and adhered to by the team while contributing to the advancement and improvement of Agile practices within the organization. In addition to facilitating all scrum events, the Scrum Master will partner with Product Managers to maintain plans and communicate the progress of the team, including product roadmaps, scrum team metrics, and program/project status reporting. The Scrum Master will also guide and coach the Scrum Team on how to effectively use Agile practices and principles to deliver high-quality products and services to customers, while resolving team impediments and optimizing team performance through appropriate coaching and development techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates and supports all scrum events: Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Sprint Review, and Sprint Retrospective.
  • Ensures Scrum is understood and the team adheres to Scrum theory, practice, and guidelines.
  • Contributes to the advancement and improvement of Agile practices within the organization.
  • Acts as servant leader of the Agile Team and directs the initiative delivery team.
  • Partners with Product Managers to maintain plans and communicate progress of the team, including product roadmaps, scrum team metrics, and program/project status reporting.
  • Develops high-level business requirements including cost estimates for initiatives to determine justification.
  • Guides and coaches the Scrum Team on how to use Agile practices and principles to deliver high-quality products and services.
  • Resolves team impediments with other Scrum Masters to increase the effectiveness of Scrum application in the organization.
  • Works with product owners to handle backlogs and new requests.
  • Optimizes team performance by recognizing areas of strength and improvement and employing appropriate coaching techniques.
  • Collaborates with key stakeholder groups to validate the effectiveness of standard processes and continuously improve process quality.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree, equivalent experience, or certification.
  • SAFe 6.0 Certification - SA, PO/PM, etc. (Scaled Agile)
  • 7+ years of information technology experience including 5+ years applying Agile and Scrum principles within teams and/or organizations using agile metrics to analyze and improve sprint planning.
  • 5+ years' experience working within agile frameworks or methods (i.e., SAFe, Scrum, Kanban) and applying techniques such as story splitting, estimation, velocity, retrospection, etc.
  • 5+ years' planning and problem-solving experience with product management and delivery teams.
  • 5+ years creating and delivering presentations and project plans.
  • 2+ years working with tools such as Atlassian (JIRA/Confluence), Microsoft M365 suite, and/or Cloud-based platforms (Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud).

Nice-to-haves

  • Scrum Alliance Certified Scrum Master (CSM), Certified Scrum Professional (CSP) or PMI's Agile Certified Professional (ACP).
  • Servant leadership experience as Scrum Master on an Agile Release Train.
  • Familiarity with product/project development experience on Agile Teams in a technology-focused organization.
  • Ability to align change management strategies with product development/deployments.
  • Demonstrated experience facilitating meetings at multiple levels of an organization and an understanding of facilitation techniques.
  • Ability to understand and represent both the business and technology.
