About the position
The Special Education Assistant II at CLS Ayers Elementary provides specialized instructional support services to students with various disabilities in pre K-12 and adult education settings. This role involves working closely with students to assist with their learning needs, promote social engagement, and maintain a supportive educational environment under the supervision of the site administrator.
Responsibilities
- Communicate regularly with other members of the instructional team regarding daily performance of the students
- Assist students in a group or on an individual basis with specific instructional tasks
- Support students with special needs in learning or using special equipment and instructional media
- Help students with special needs in the development and maintenance of appropriate social behaviors
- Encourage and assist students in communicating and engaging in social activities
- Supervise students during snack, lunch, and outdoor activities
- Assist students in learning gross motor skills and independent mobility
- Maintain and prepare records related to special education programs
- Assist in teaching self-feeding, grooming, and dressing skills
- Assist in the toileting of students, including lifting and cleaning
- May assist with community-based instruction
- May be required to travel from location to location
Requirements
- High school graduation or equivalent
- One year experience working with students or completion of one year of college-level coursework in a related field
- Successful completion of the Instructional Assistant Proficiency Examination or appropriate certification
- Knowledge of special instructional or communication procedures
- Understanding of individual differences in children
- Ability to apply learning reinforcement and behavior modification techniques
- Skill in following oral and written directions and maintaining confidentiality
Nice-to-haves
- Certification in First Aid and CPR
- Valid California Driver's License
