About the position

The Special Education Assistant II at Sequoia Middle School provides specialized instructional support services to students with various disabilities, including emotional disturbances, autism, and behavioral challenges. This role involves working closely with students in both group and individual settings, assisting them with their educational needs and promoting their social engagement. The assistant will also maintain records and perform clerical duties related to special education programs.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate regularly with other members of the instructional team regarding daily performance of the students
  • Assist students in a group or on an individual basis with specific instructional tasks
  • Help students with special needs in learning or using special equipment and instructional media
  • Support students in the development and maintenance of appropriate social behaviors
  • Encourage and assist students in communicating and engaging in social activities
  • Supervise students during snack, lunch, and outdoor activities
  • Assist students in learning gross motor skills and independent mobility
  • Maintain and prepare records related to special education programs
  • Lift and move students with special needs as required
  • Assist in teaching self-feeding, grooming, and dressing skills
  • Assist in the toileting of students, including lifting and cleaning
  • May assist with community-based instruction
  • May be required to travel from location to location

Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent
  • One year experience working with students or completion of one year of college-level coursework in a related field
  • Successful completion of the Instructional Assistant Proficiency Examination or appropriate certification
  • Knowledge of special instructional or communication procedures
  • Understanding of individual differences in children
  • Ability to apply learning reinforcement and behavior modification techniques
  • Skill in following oral and written directions and communicating clearly
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and establish cooperative relationships

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification in First Aid and CPR
  • Valid California Driver's License
