About the position

The Chief Information Officer (CIO) at Seattle City Light is a senior executive role responsible for providing strategic leadership and operational oversight of the utility's information technology and data management. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the utility's technology infrastructure is secure, reliable, and aligned with the organization's goals of delivering affordable and environmentally responsible energy services. The CIO will collaborate with various departments to implement technology solutions that enhance operational efficiency and customer service while fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Recommend and participate in the formulation and adoption of Utility-wide goals and objectives, strategic plans, processes, and policies.
  • Set the vision and strategy for maintaining the Utility's enterprise-wide architecture, infrastructure, and cyber security standards.
  • Provide strategic direction and oversight of the information technology division, delivering standardized project management methodologies and new system implementations.
  • Work closely with the City of Seattle's Information Technology and Cyber Security staff to secure Utility technology systems.
  • Support the development of employees to improve performance and cultivate talent within the organization.
  • Represent the Utility in national, regional, and local forums and associations.
  • Establish and nurture effective relationships with employees, customers, and stakeholders to support business goals.
  • Oversee and direct union-management relationships to negotiate solutions that accomplish goals.
  • Strive to improve the Utility to deliver best-in-class customer service.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of progressively responsible assignments in technology management and leadership, with at least 10 years in a large, complex organization.
  • Deep understanding of the utility industry, including regulatory requirements and market trends.
  • Ability to manage budgets and analyze financial statements for sound financial decision-making.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and dismantling institutional racism.
  • Strong customer service advocacy for the needs of customers and ratepayers.
  • Effective communication skills to articulate the company's vision and strategy to stakeholders.
  • Strategic thinking capabilities to develop and execute long-term plans for organizational success.
  • Holistic understanding of technology's impact on work and ability to recommend enterprise-wide solutions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's and/or master's degree in information technology, information systems, computer science, or related field.
  • 10+ years of executive-level leadership experience in a technology environment.
  • Experience navigating the complexities of utility regulations and municipal functions.
  • Motivation to influence the development of future utility leaders.
  • Experience leading multi-unit teams through significant change.
  • Advanced experience in gaining multi-level stakeholder buy-in.
