About the position

The Secondary Counselor (Career Counselor) position at Michigan City Area Schools is designed to assist students in achieving success in Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. The counselor will monitor students' technical and basic skills, coordinate program marketing and evaluation, and serve as a resource for area counselors. The role involves collaboration with students, teachers, and administrators to facilitate career planning and ensure compliance with state performance standards.

Responsibilities

  • Provide student counseling in collaboration with home school counselors to direct students into viable career education plans.
  • Maintain a student data system as required by the IDOE and IDWD.
  • Coordinate the development of dual credit agreements.
  • Facilitate the Diploma data collection and verification process.
  • Coordinate information flow to area schools regarding CTE program offerings and enrollment procedures.
  • Assist students and teachers with information on colleges, trade schools, armed services, and other career opportunities.
  • Coordinate visitations of students from sending schools.
  • Disseminate information about area CTE choices to high school counselors.
  • Schedule presentations explaining CTE options to students and community groups.
  • Develop career planning materials for teachers and counselors.
  • Maintain and update the school calendar.
  • Coordinate attendance and communication with sending school counselors regarding student successes and issues.
  • Assist junior high counselors and teachers in providing career guidance.
  • Maintain timelines for Indiana Student Reporting (INTERS) Reports as requested by Administration.
  • Enter data as required by INTERS and Administration.
  • Collect and retain competency attainment records for all students.
  • Monitor teacher curricula and administer student competency certificates.
  • Support the continued certification of all CTE programs.
  • Oversee file maintenance of all CTE programs.
  • Provide necessary data for 30A reports and spring pre-enrollment numbers.
  • Stay current with CTE legislation and state requirements.
  • Oversee applications for new CTE programs.
  • Assist in student recognition and award activities, including the Technical Honor Society.
  • Participate in community activities promoting the area career and technical education center.
  • Assist in coordinating all career and technical education activities.
  • Assist in preparing and collecting follow-up and quality assurance surveys.
  • Help develop handbooks with policies, regulations, standards, and procedures for CTE students.
  • Assist with grade reporting and credit posting for all students.
  • Retain work-based learning programs and monitor training agreements and documentation.
  • Provide additional services to students and staff as directed by the Director of Career and Technical Education.

Requirements

  • Licensed counselor with experience in Career and Technical Education or technical training.
  • Enthusiasm for career and technical education.
  • Outstanding communication skills and ability to make dynamic community presentations.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with school counselors and administrators.
  • Strong administrative and organizational abilities.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of a variety of careers.
  • Sincere desire to help students and commitment to Vocational Education as a viable career option.
