About the position

The Special Education Life Skills Teacher is responsible for providing tailored educational experiences to special education students, focusing on their intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. This role involves developing and modifying curricula, preparing instructional materials, and implementing individualized education plans (IEPs) to meet the unique needs of each student. The teacher collaborates with various stakeholders, including students, parents, and staff, to ensure effective learning and development in a supportive classroom environment.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with students, parents, and staff to develop IEPs through the ARD Committee process.
  • Implement instructional, therapeutic, or skill development programs for assigned students, providing written evidence of preparation.
  • Conduct assessments of student learning styles and plan appropriate instructional strategies and materials.
  • Present subject matter effectively according to IEP guidelines, using various instructional techniques and media.
  • Work with classroom teachers to modify regular curricula and assist special education students in regular classes.
  • Participate in ARD Committee meetings regularly.
  • Select books, equipment, and instructional media for the classroom.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  • Provide or supervise personal care, medical care, and feeding of students as stated in IEPs.
  • Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities and sponsor approved outside activities.
  • Consult with district and outside resources regarding students' educational, social, medical, and personal needs.
  • Create a conducive classroom environment for learning and development.
  • Manage student behavior and administer discipline, including crisis intervention and physical restraint as necessary.
  • Consult with classroom teachers on behavior management according to IEPs.
  • Ensure safety and protection of students, equipment, and materials.
  • Plan and assign work for teacher aides and volunteers, overseeing their completion.
  • Establish and maintain open communication with parents, students, and colleagues.
  • Participate in staff development activities to enhance job-related skills.
  • Comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies for special education teachers.
  • Compile, maintain, and file required reports and documents.
  • Attend faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university.
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate with required special education endorsements.
  • Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area.
  • Knowledge of the ARD Committee process and IEP goal setting and implementation.
  • Ability to adapt curriculum and instruction for special needs students.
  • Effective communication skills.
