About the position

The Secondary Visual Art Teacher at Kansas City Public Schools is responsible for teaching one or more subjects to students in secondary schools. This role involves a variety of instructional methods, including lecturing, demonstrating, and utilizing audiovisual aids and other materials to enhance student learning. The teacher will prepare course objectives and outlines in accordance with curriculum guidelines and state requirements, ensuring that lessons are effectively structured to meet educational standards. In addition to delivering lessons, the teacher will assign homework, assess student progress through tests, and maintain accurate records of attendance and academic performance. Communication with parents is a key component of this role, as the teacher will meet with them to discuss their child's progress and any issues that may arise. Participation in faculty meetings, professional development workshops, and educational conferences is also expected, as is the sponsorship of student activities and organizations. The teacher may also assist students in selecting their courses of study and provide counseling for academic and adjustment challenges. This position requires a commitment to fostering a positive learning environment and maintaining discipline within the classroom. The teacher will perform other related duties as assigned, contributing to the overall educational mission of the school.

Responsibilities

  • Instructs students by lecturing, demonstrating, and using audiovisual aids and other materials to supplement presentations.
  • Prepares course objectives and outline for course of study following curriculum guidelines or requirements of state and school.
  • Assigns lessons and corrects homework.
  • Administers tests to evaluate pupil progress, records results, and issues reports to inform parents of progress.
  • Keeps an attendance record.
  • Maintains discipline in classroom.
  • Meets with parents to discuss student progress and problems.
  • Participates in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops.
  • Performs related duties such as sponsoring one or more activities or student organizations, assisting pupils in selecting course of study, and counseling student in adjustment and academic problems.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Secondary Education from a four-year college or university.
  • Missouri State Certification in Art (K-12).
  • Demonstrated experience and/or training in current techniques and skills in teaching secondary level students.
  • Teaching experience in urban schools.
