About the position

The Unit Secretary for the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) provides essential administrative and clerical support to ensure the efficient operation of the unit. This role is crucial in coordinating communication among patients, families, and healthcare teams, maintaining accurate medical records, and supporting patient care in a dynamic post-operative recovery environment.

Responsibilities

  • Greet and assist patients, families, and visitors upon arrival to the PACU.
  • Manage incoming calls, relay messages, and facilitate communication between nursing staff and other departments.
  • Maintain patient charts, including preparing admission packets and updating records with new information.
  • Verify patient insurance.
  • Schedule and coordinate follow-up appointments or procedures as directed.
  • Support patient discharge by preparing documentation and providing instructions under supervision.
  • Monitor unit workflows to support compliance with hospital policies and regulations.
  • Provide general clerical support, such as data entry, filing, and copying.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; additional training or certification in medical administration preferred.
  • Previous experience in a hospital or medical office setting is an asset.
  • Proficiency in computer systems and familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) systems.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and multitasking skills.
  • Availability to work flexible, part-time hours, including occasional weekends or holidays.
