About the position

The Unit Secretary position within the Department of Justice is responsible for providing administrative support in a correctional environment. This role involves handling inquiries, managing correspondence, and assisting staff in procedural tasks while maintaining the security of the institution. The position is crucial for ensuring effective communication and operational efficiency within the unit.

Responsibilities

  • Handle routine inquiries from staff and inmates, providing technical assistance and answering questions regarding correctional programs.
  • Receive orders to the office, determine the nature of requests, and direct them to appropriate staff or provide information personally.
  • Review correspondence prepared for the supervisor and other staff members.
  • Assist the Unit Manager and staff in expediting the work of the office.
  • Maintain security of the institution as part of correctional responsibilities.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GL-05 level in federal service, including experience in handling requests for information, processing correspondence, and performing office automation duties.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to organize workflow of clerical and administrative support functions.
  • Experience with data management on a computer.
