About the position

The Security Guard position at the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office involves protective service work focused on securing, patrolling, and surveilling City property and grounds. The role requires knowledge of security routines, procedures, and regulations, and involves both routine and situational tasks. The work environment includes both indoor and outdoor settings, with responsibilities that include monitoring surveillance equipment and ensuring the safety of public buildings.

Responsibilities

• Patrols, secures, and inspects public buildings to protect against vandalism, fire, and other hazards.
• Writes reports and completes documents such as security logs and incident reports.
• Notifies department officials and emergency services when necessary.
• Protects cashiers at special events and escorts employees to parking lots.
• Monitors and screens individuals entering and leaving City premises.
• Detains or warns trespassers and notifies authorities as needed.
• Monitors surveillance cameras and operates security equipment.
• Scans individuals and their belongings for weapons or contraband.
• Provides information and directions to visitors and City employees.
• Transports cash as an armed guard once a day.

Requirements

• One year of education and/or experience in protective services work.
• Knowledge of security rules, regulations, and procedures.
• Ability to use a firearm and knowledge of safety precautions when handling firearms.
• Ability to secure and protect City property and detain individuals when necessary.
• Effective communication skills to provide information to the public.
• Ability to maintain security logs and complete incident reports.
• Proficiency in operating security equipment such as scanners and metal detectors.
• Ability to observe and recognize suspicious behavior.
• Physical ability to stand and walk for long periods.
