About the position

As a Security Officer at the Northside Branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library, you will play a crucial role in ensuring a safe and secure environment for all patrons and staff. Your primary responsibilities will include addressing disruptive behavior, preventing theft, and responding to safety incidents, all while maintaining a positive customer experience. This full-time position requires a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, and involves regular patrols of the library's premises.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol buildings and grounds at regular intervals and handle observed irregularities or problems appropriately.
  • Prevent theft of Library property and follow all issued post orders.
  • Use non-violent crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques to confront disruptive or offensive behavior.
  • Ensure a positive customer experience by greeting customers and answering directional questions.
  • Respond to, investigate, and report any safety hazards, security incidents, or emergencies, including reviewing CCTV footage as needed.
  • Ensure the building is secure at closing and that all staff and customers depart safely.
  • Complete issued closing checklist daily.
  • Maintain a professional appearance by keeping uniform in good condition.
  • Carry all necessary equipment in working order while on duty and report equipment needs to Security management.
  • Collaborate with law enforcement on public safety issues and file police reports as needed.
  • Assist in emergency response drills and other training throughout the year.
  • Assist with testing and validation of security equipment as needed.
  • Assist physically challenged customers entering or leaving library facilities, including during emergency evacuations.
  • Render first aid in medical emergencies and contact trained medical professionals as appropriate.
  • Document incidents in the reporting software according to guidelines.
  • Bring serious issues or those with significant risk to Security and location management for awareness and resolution.
  • Serve as on-call Officer or fill in as Dispatcher as needed.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Experience or training in security, public safety, public service, corrections, youth services, or a combination thereof, preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to carry and use Oleoresin Capsicum (OC or pepper spray) upon receiving necessary training.
  • Ability to respond quickly and appropriately when the physical safety of staff and/or customers is endangered.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and evenings.
  • Ability to actively patrol (on foot) and use stairs throughout the duration of the shift.
  • Ability to operate library technology including personal computer, email, and software programs (i.e. Windows/Microsoft Office).
  • Valid driver license which meets the minimum requirements of CML's vehicle insurance policy.
