About the position

The Security Officer is responsible for protecting the campus community through proactive prevention and outreach strategies. This role involves engaging with the community to identify and reduce behavioral and criminal conduct that affects the academic experience. The officer will respond to calls for service, enforce university policies, conduct patrols, assist in program operations, and represent the University of Illinois Police Department (UIPD) at various events.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as primary responding officer to non-emergency calls for service and prepare written incident reports.
  • Enforce University policies and guidelines, including parking enforcement and special event rules.
  • Assist police officers during calls for service, property handling, and crime scene security.
  • Interpret and explain laws to the public related to law enforcement processes and procedures.
  • Operate department vehicles and equipment, including animal control units and police radios.
  • Complete incident and technical reports as required; respond to subpoenas and testify in court.
  • Lock/unlock university buildings and verify building security; respond to fire, security, and emergency alarms.
  • Conduct general patrol of the campus area on foot, bicycle, or via patrol vehicle.
  • Provide routine and targeted patrols of campus facilities and property.
  • Assist daily operations for UIPD outreach programs, including COAST/REACH and Safety Ambassadors.
  • Serve as a contact person for citizen inquiries and concerns; prepare and distribute informational materials.
  • Perform community outreach, intervention, and crime prevention activities as required.
  • Represent UIPD at campus events and maintain extensive contact with students, faculty, and staff.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • Valid Illinois driver's license.
  • No record of conviction of a felony or a crime involving moral turpitude.
  • Current State of Illinois Permanent Employee Registration Card (PERC).
  • One year of security experience in an institutional or medical setting.
  • Knowledge of federal codes, state statutes, and university regulations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Fluency in a second language is highly regarded.
