About the position

The Security Officer at Corewell Health is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for all individuals on hospital property. This role involves patrolling the campus, monitoring security systems, assisting patients and visitors, and enforcing hospital policies. The officer may also be required to perform duties related to emergency response and law enforcement, including the potential use of electronic control devices and arrest authority under Michigan law.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol campus on foot, in vehicle, or on bike as assigned, observing for suspicious activities and security violations.
  • Perform various duties at assigned post, assisting patients, visitors, and employees, and enforcing hospital rules and regulations.
  • Monitor phones, alarms, cameras, and radio traffic in the Security Operations Center.
  • Provide statistical safety and security reporting to management regarding performance and compliance issues.
  • Complete daily reports on activities, irregularities, and investigations, and log all calls and lost articles.
  • Investigate suspected crimes on hospital grounds and cooperate with law enforcement on complaints.
  • Provide security escorts and assistance to employees, visitors, or patients as needed.
  • Respond to inquiries and direct visitors, preventing unauthorized access to restricted areas.
  • Use verbal de-escalation skills to manage volatile situations without escalating to violence.
  • Assist nursing staff with physical management of patients as ordered by a physician.
  • Utilize defensive tactics and approved force continuum if necessary to safeguard lives.
  • Possess and utilize electronic weapons as determined by policy.
  • Provide CPR and first aid in medical emergencies until trained staff arrive.
  • Assist with Hazmat/Decontamination procedures as needed.
  • Report and respond to incidents of fire and safety hazards.
  • Inspect firefighting apparatus and assist with emergency drills.
  • Release patient remains to appropriate agencies.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of two to three years' law-enforcement related work experience (e.g., police officer, hospital security, military police).
  • Ability to take charge and direct others in emergencies.
  • Approval and authorization for Electronic Control Devices (ECD) use, including a current Carry Pistol License (CPL).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification within 90 days of hire.
  • First Aid certification within 90 days of hire.
