About the position

MSNBC is seeking an experienced Segment Producer for the Morning Joe program. This role is crucial in shaping the daily news narrative and requires a blend of creativity, strong writing skills, and a deep understanding of American politics. The Segment Producer will be responsible for researching, reporting, and writing daily news scripts, guest segments, and reporter hits. This position involves determining the appropriate video, sound, and graphics for assigned segments, ensuring that each piece is engaging and informative. In addition to scriptwriting, the Segment Producer will communicate daily story development with the Senior Producer and will be present in the control room during the airing of live segments. This role also includes participation in editorial planning and pitching story ideas that resonate with the audience. The ideal candidate will thrive under pressure, managing tight deadlines while maintaining high editorial standards. Candidates should possess a strong background in journalism, with at least five years of experience in cable or network news, websites, or newspapers. A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience is required, along with exceptional writing, research, and reporting skills. Familiarity with editing, particularly in breaking news scenarios, is preferred. The ability to develop compelling story ideas and work collaboratively with guests and production elements is essential for success in this role.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • 5 years of experience in some form of journalism required (i.e. cable or network news, website, newspaper).
  • Must have a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Strong writing skills and knowledge of American politics.
  • Strong research and reporting skills.
  • Edit room experience and breaking news experience is preferred.
  • Candidate should be able to deal with daily script deadline pressure.

  • Possess ability to develop story ideas, research, and plan segments.
  • Ability to 'book' guests, and work with graphics and video elements.
  • Exceptional editorial skills: Ability to recognize stories with high potential for provocative, compelling television.
  • Knowledge of current events, politics, and pop culture.
  • Wide-range reader of news, including op-eds.
  • Proficient in both tape and desktop editing.
