About the position

The SEIU Patient Unit Secretary in the NICU/Newborn Nursery at the University of Rochester plays a crucial role in supporting the nursing staff and ensuring smooth operations within the unit. This full-time position requires the individual to work 40 hours per week, with a schedule that includes day, evening, and night shifts, as well as every other weekend and holiday. The Patient Unit Secretary will be under the direct supervision of the Nurse Manager or their designee, and will be responsible for assembling and maintaining patient records, processing orders, and performing skilled receptionist duties. This role is vital for facilitating unit operations through effective communication with all hospital departments, as well as greeting patients, families, and healthcare team members. The position demands a high level of organization and attention to detail, as the secretary will be the first point of contact for many individuals entering the unit.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble and maintain patient records under the supervision of the Nurse Manager.
  • Process orders and perform skilled receptionist duties.
  • Facilitate unit operations through effective communication with all hospital departments.
  • Greet patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Ensure accurate data entry and maintain confidentiality of patient information.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • One year of clerical experience with demonstrated written and verbal communication skills, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology is preferred.
  • Typing or data entry experience is preferred.
