About the position

The Self-Contained Special Education Paraeducator position at Juneau School District is a full-time role primarily focused on supporting students enrolled in special education programs, including the Behavioral Education Support Team (BEST), Developmental Education Classroom-Communication (DEC-C), Developmental Educational Classroom (DEC), and the Transitions program. The paraeducator will work closely with students to present educational material and activities aimed at enhancing their skills in various subjects such as reading, writing, math, computers, and vocational education. This role involves working individually with students or in small groups to facilitate learning and development. In addition to instructional support, the paraeducator is responsible for recording grades and collecting data to measure students' progress and behavior. The position requires a strong understanding of behavior modification techniques, as the paraeducator will need to manage and deescalate challenging behaviors, including those exhibited by emotionally disturbed students. The ability to remain calm and follow through with established plans during stressful situations is essential. The paraeducator will also be expected to maintain effective communication with students, staff, supervisors, and parents, ensuring that all interactions are respectful and supportive. This role is critical in fostering a positive learning environment for students with special needs, and it requires a commitment to confidentiality and the ability to adapt instructional techniques to meet the diverse needs of students.

Responsibilities

  • Work with students in special education programs to present educational material and activities.
  • Provide instructional assistance in areas such as reading, writing, math, computers, and vocational education.
  • Record grades and collect data on students' progress and behavior.
  • Manage and deescalate challenging behaviors in students, including crisis situations.
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, supervisors, and parents.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student information and records.
  • Adapt instructional techniques to meet the diverse needs of students.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Some prior experience working with school-age children preferred.
  • Valid Alaska driver's license required.
  • Must have either an AA degree, or 48 semester hours, or be willing to take and pass the ParaPro Assessment.
  • Knowledge of files and record keeping, personal computers, and related software.
  • Understanding of school-age children's behavior and behavior modification techniques.

Nice-to-haves

  • CPR and first aid certification preferred.
  • Familiarity with district-approved behavior management techniques.
