About the position

The Self-perform Estimator at McCarthy Building Companies will engage in all phases of the bid and estimating process, focusing primarily on concrete work. This role involves performing quantity take-offs, pricing, and bidding for construction projects, as well as collaborating with subcontractors and internal teams to ensure accurate and competitive estimates. The estimator will also be responsible for maintaining relationships with subcontractors and staying updated on industry trends and estimating technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Perform quantity take-offs for construction projects.
  • Assist in pricing and bidding processes.
  • Develop and document logical assumptions during conceptual estimating activities.
  • Communicate with architects and consultants to clarify scope of work, materials, and schedule requirements.
  • Conduct reviews of milestone documents for pricing of value alternative opportunities.
  • Participate in the internal estimate review process.
  • Assist with final assembly of estimates for presentation to owners.
  • Collect and organize all bid information for future reference after the bid.
  • Aid field operations with change order pricing as needed.
  • Direct and coordinate information and documents to subcontractors.
  • Prepare contractual exhibits for scope of work for subcontracts.
  • Participate in hard bid/estimating and GMP budgeting activities by soliciting subcontractor support and evaluating bids.
  • Build relationships with subcontractors to gain a competitive advantage.
  • Attend industry events and represent McCarthy professionally.
  • Maintain relationships with internal McCarthy clients.
  • Stay current with the latest estimating technology and techniques.
  • Demonstrate basic conceptual estimating skills by interpolating data.
  • Question designs and assumptions and present ideas to the manager.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management or Engineering or 5-7 years of equivalent experience.
  • General knowledge of construction principles and processes, especially concrete work.
  • Ability to synthesize cost data from various sources into a conceptual estimate.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings and specifications.
  • General knowledge of negotiated bids, hard bids, and GMP processes.
  • Working knowledge of estimating technology and tools such as OST, WinEst, and BIM related software.
  • Strong math and analytical skills.
