About the position

The Deputy Chief of Staff for the Colorado Senate Democrats plays a crucial role in implementing the caucus's legislative agenda. This position involves overseeing the operations of the majority office, managing staff, and engaging in policy analysis and communications. The Deputy Chief of Staff is responsible for supporting caucus leadership, managing a team, and ensuring effective communication with stakeholders, making it a dynamic and impactful role in shaping progressive policy in Colorado.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a go-to problem solver for caucus members whenever issues arise
  • Staff and support caucus meetings, including prepping materials and agendas
  • Staff the President and Majority Leader in meetings with legislative leaders and the Governor
  • Provide strategic guidance and analysis to President and Majority Leader regarding policy proposals and stakeholder engagement
  • Assist with monitoring Senate floor work and debate, providing support when issues arise
  • Work with leadership and staff in both chambers and the Governor's office to advance caucus legislation and priorities
  • Review and draft policy proposals; work directly with Senators to develop legislation; and assist with stakeholder engagement, problem solving, and legislative strategy
  • Assist Committee Chairs and policy staff in managing legislation referred to each committee
  • Oversee the monitoring of committee hearings, providing support when issues arise
  • Work with the Communications Director and Chief of Staff to develop caucus communication strategy
  • Review caucus communications, including press releases, op-eds, talking points, speeches/remarks, and interview prep materials
  • Assist with the day-to-day management of a 14 person staff, including weekly check-ins, overseeing work-plan implementation, and project management
  • Serve as a general resource for all staff, providing guidance and direction when issues arise
  • Manage administrative processes for the caucus, including late bills and sponsorship requests
  • Work closely with Senate Services in facilitating any administrative needs of the caucus

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of experience navigating the political or legislative landscape of Colorado
  • At least 2 years of experience supervising staff
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability in successfully managing multiple projects, with competing deadlines and priorities, to completion
  • Strong background in policy development and analysis
  • Familiarity with principles of political messaging
  • Proven self-starter who shows strong initiative, works independently, and sets high standards for individual and team performance
  • Exceptional 'people skills' with an ability to work effectively with a variety of people and organizations
  • Willingness, and capacity, to be flexible as priorities conflict or change
