About the position

The Senior Accountant/Accountant position at the City of Haines City is responsible for supporting the Finance Department through various accounting functions, including accounts receivable and payable, financial reporting, and compliance with regulatory requirements. The role involves preparing journal entries, reconciling accounts, assisting with audits, and maintaining financial systems. This position may also offer the opportunity to work as an Accountant if the candidate does not meet the qualifications for the Senior Accountant role.

Responsibilities

  • Review accounts payable and/or payroll as assigned.
  • Prepare adjusting journal entries to the general ledger as needed.
  • Reconcile the general ledger to subsidiary ledgers and bank accounts.
  • Prepare reports for federal and state regulatory agencies.
  • Compile regular monthly financial statements and special reports.
  • Assist in updating the City's accounting procedures manual.
  • Prepare schedules and reports for tax remittance.
  • Assist in developing automated systems for financial transactions.
  • Maintain computerized fixed asset accounting system.
  • Conduct research projects as requested by superiors.
  • Prepare and maintain custom financial reports.
  • Upload and post financial information to the general ledger.
  • Assist personnel in other City departments with accounting issues.
  • Perform special assignments requiring technical accounting knowledge.
  • Assist external auditors during annual audits.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
  • At least three (3) years of related work experience in Accounting, Finance, or Business.
  • Excellent oral communication skills.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical computations and analysis.
  • Competence in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with financial software systems.
  • Knowledge of governmental accounting principles.
