About the position

The ACLU is seeking a full-time Senior Accountant II - Tax & Employee Benefits Compliance to join its Finance Department in New York, NY. This hybrid role requires in-office attendance two days a week. The position is responsible for managing significant functional areas within the ACLU's accounting, ensuring compliance with tax laws and employee benefits regulations, and supporting the Finance Team's operations. The ideal candidate will possess strong accounting knowledge, analytical skills, and a commitment to the ACLU's mission.

Responsibilities

  • Provide timely and thorough responses to internal and external stakeholder inquiries.
  • Perform account reconciliations ensuring accuracy and proper documentation for reporting purposes.
  • Assist with audits by preparing schedules and managing deliverable deadlines.
  • Support the Revenue and Investments team with reconciliations and projects as needed.
  • Complete ad hoc reports and projects as requested by Finance Leadership.
  • Suggest accounting policies and procedures based on GAAP and industry best practices.
  • Coordinate with the Controller on the preparation and review of tax returns.
  • Assist with the preparation of tax filings and government reporting.
  • Manage all tax correspondence and audits.
  • Prepare year-end estimated tax payments for agencies.
  • Prepare ad hoc tax reports for stakeholders.
  • Prepare and review tax provisions for financial statements.
  • Develop processes to ensure compliance with tax agencies.
  • Advise the Finance team on the impact of new tax laws and regulations.
  • Review annual K-1s for unrelated business income/loss.
  • Maintain organized electronic files for record retention.
  • Review annual returns prepared by external auditors before filing.
  • Prepare monthly filings for NYS Sales and Use tax.
  • Apply for and maintain state sales tax exemptions.
  • Coordinate with tax consultants on sales tax filings.
  • Communicate progress of initiatives to stakeholders.
  • Review calculation of affiliates' invoices for retirement plans.
  • Review quarterly reconciliation of employee census data for accuracy.
  • Review SOC-1 reports for control issues annually.
  • Review monthly trust statements for pension plans for accuracy.
  • Review annual reconciliation between payroll registers and W-3 forms.
  • Review timeliness schedule related to pension plan contributions.
  • Review reconciliation of contributions to ensure accuracy.
  • Review notes receivable from participants for compliance.
  • Review benefit payments to verify compliance with Plan provisions.

Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and current accounting best practices.
  • Strong knowledge of pension benefits and tax laws impacting non-profits.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for a collegial working environment.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in writing and speaking.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel.

Nice-to-haves

  • Demonstrated years of relevant work experience in an accounting role, preferably in a non-profit organization.
  • CPA certification with knowledge of GAAP and accounting best practices.
  • Knowledge of accounting reporting software and financial technology.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office products, especially advanced Excel skills.
  • Experience with cloud-based financial systems and data aggregation tools.
