About the position

The Senior Accountant position at Old Dominion University is responsible for supporting the Associate Controller and General Accounting Manager in managing and reporting cash and net positions. This role requires a high level of accounting expertise and accuracy, performing complex financial operations in accordance with established policies. The Senior Accountant will independently research and implement accounting standards and best practices that affect financial processes.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Associate Controller and General Accounting Manager in financial management and reporting.
  • Perform complex financial operations including preparation, examination, analysis, maintenance, reconciliation, and verification of financial records.
  • Independently research and analyze accounting pronouncements and best practices.
  • Develop and evaluate options for complex financial problems and implement solutions.
  • Prepare and analyze various fiscal reports.

Requirements

  • Comprehensive knowledge of automated financial systems and MS Excel, particularly in report writing and analysis.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and practices.
  • Experience in identifying complex problems and developing solutions.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills for interaction with senior officials and customers.
  • Ability to assemble, analyze, reconcile, and research complex financial data.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in Higher Education or government accounting practices.
  • Advanced MS Excel skills including pivot tables and advanced formulas.
  • Current active CPA/CMA certification preferred.
