About the position

The Senior Accountant at Matson Navigation Company, Inc. is responsible for performing monthly and quarterly close procedures, ensuring compliance with SEC reporting requirements and U.S. GAAP, and maintaining financial records. This role provides a strong foundation for understanding the financial close process within a publicly traded company and involves detailed financial analysis, internal reporting, and collaboration with auditors.

Responsibilities

  • Perform monthly and quarterly close procedures.
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of internal and external reporting in compliance with SEC reporting requirements and U.S. GAAP.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with internal policies and procedures including SOX.
  • Prepare detailed financial analysis and query reporting.
  • Maintain financial records, supporting documentation, and reconciliations.
  • Prepare supporting working papers including month-end journal entries, account reconciliations, and GL account analysis.
  • Prepare internal reporting documents for management meetings.
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of accounting functions performed by the Controllers Department.
  • Provide support with external financial statement audits and SOX 404 internal control requirements.
  • Support SEC reporting by preparing footnote tables, analyses, and narratives.
  • Prepare external statutory audit and reporting requirements for domestic and foreign subsidiaries.
  • Assist with preparation and completion of ad-hoc accounting projects.
  • Participate in special projects and assignments as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • 3 to 5 years of overall financial business experience, including financial close, reporting, and consolidation expertise.
  • Hands-on experience with financial operating and reporting systems (Oracle/Workday preferred).
  • Good knowledge of U.S. GAAP, SOX 404 internal controls, and technical accounting.
  • Highly detail-oriented with a critical degree of accuracy regarding data entry and analysis.
  • Ability to prioritize work and perform multiple tasks simultaneously while adhering to deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team in a fast-moving environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong computer skills, especially Microsoft Office Suite (Excel/Word/Outlook).
