About the position

The Senior Accountant at South Boston Community Health Center is responsible for advanced accounting tasks within the Health Center's financial system. This role ensures compliance with regulatory, contractual, and audit requirements while supporting the financial operations of the organization. The Senior Accountant will work closely with various departments to maintain accurate financial records and assist in audits, contributing to the overall mission of providing high-quality care to the community.

Responsibilities

  • Record cash deposits based on the nature of the payments and reconcile bank accounts monthly.
  • Work closely with the billing department to obtain and understand deposit details.
  • Prepare monthly Accounts Receivable/Contractual offsets entries and reconcile cash payments against receivable balances.
  • Analyze prior period adjustments and their impact on the current month to normalize current month figures and reconcile discrepancies.
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis.
  • Analyze monthly operational expenses and ensure necessary accruals are recorded and reconciled.
  • Maintain a strong documentation system for all related supports.
  • Participate in external audits and associated reporting.
  • Assist the Controller with ad hoc reports for internal and external parties.
  • Assume other duties as assigned.
  • May provide technical supervision to less experienced staff as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required.
  • Five or more years of progressively responsible accounting experience required.
  • Grant accounting experience required.
  • Advanced knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • 4-5 years of accounting experience in the healthcare industry with a focus on compliance.
  • Knowledge of accounting and auditing principles and practices under GAAP accounting.
  • High proficiency in Excel and Microsoft Office Systems.
  • Detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy.
  • Excellent verbal and communication skills.
  • Ability to perform day-to-day fiscal activities at all levels.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, work accurately, meet deadlines, and provide effective management reporting.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships across all levels within the organization.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and manage modest projects successfully.

Nice-to-haves

  • CPA License preferred.
  • Healthcare experience preferred.
