About the position

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) is seeking a Senior Actuarial Analyst to join our Global Actuarial Team in either our Boston or New York offices. This role is designed for an individual who embodies both excellence in their work and strong character. As part of the North American Casualty Team, the Senior Actuarial Analyst will play a crucial role in large account pricing and conduct in-depth analyses that will inform our experience and exposure rating models. This position requires frequent communication with the Casualty underwriting team and actuaries globally, making the analyst a significant asset to the overall team. The responsibilities of this role include developing, implementing, and maintaining quantitative diagnostic tools that underwriters will use to price individual risks and manage a portfolio of business. The analyst will collaborate effectively with the actuarial data and analytics team to enhance processes and ensure high standards of data integrity. Additionally, the role involves providing insights into the company's business through the use of various tools, including SQL queries and Excel, and offering technical support to underwriters as needed. The analyst will also utilize external data sets to improve pricing methodologies, providing valuable guidance to underwriters.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain quantitative diagnostic tools for pricing individual risks and managing a portfolio of business.
  • Collaborate effectively with the actuarial data and analytics team to enhance processes and maintain data integrity.
  • Provide insights into the company's business using tools such as SQL queries and Excel.
  • Provide technical support to underwriters in Excel and SQL as needed.
  • Utilize external data sets to improve pricing methodologies for underwriter guidance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent training in computer science, actuarial science, mathematics, economics, statistics or related field.
  • Actively pursuing the FCAS designation.
  • Successful completion of at least four actuarial exams is required.
  • 3+ years of relevant work experience.
  • Intermediate to advanced Excel skills.
  • Intermediate to advanced VBA skills are strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in SQL or R is preferred.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment as well as independently.
  • Strong desire to learn from and share knowledge with teammates.
  • Effective time management, with the ability to juggle multiple projects at the same time.
