About the position

The Senior Advisor, Executive Communications will play a pivotal role in advancing the mission of the Center for Reproductive Rights by crafting compelling speeches and communications that reflect the vision and values of the organization. This position requires an experienced speechwriter who can translate complex legal issues into accessible, persuasive, and impactful messages tailored to the styles and voices of the Center's top executives. The ideal candidate will primarily write for the CEO, Nancy Northup, and must be a strategic thinker, masterful storyteller, and deeply committed to reproductive rights. Reporting to the Chief of Staff and positioned within the Office of the President, the Senior Advisor will collaborate closely with various teams across the Center, including Communications and Marketing, Government and External Relations, Programs, Press, Development, and Litigation. This role demands a versatile communicator capable of writing impactful communications for multiple executives, shaping overarching executive and crisis communication strategies, and ensuring alignment with the organization's goals and messaging. The Senior Advisor will be based in New York City and may require domestic and international travel. The responsibilities include developing speeches, thought leadership articles, fundraising event content, media engagement, internal communications, crisis communication, and project management. The position is designed for someone who can manage multiple priorities effectively and create content efficiently while maintaining the organization's reputation and messaging consistency.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and write speeches, talking points, presentations, and other communications for Nancy Northup and other executives, ensuring alignment with the organization's goals and messaging.
  • Elevate the thought leadership of executives by developing articles, op-eds, and other written materials that position them as authoritative voices in the field of reproductive rights.
  • Provide support for high-profile events, conferences, donor cultivation events, and public engagements by writing impactful content and ensuring a consistent and compelling message.
  • Work in collaboration with the press team to develop key executive quotes and support media opportunities and interviews for executives.
  • Support the development of key internal communications vehicles such as content and talking points for staff meetings and critical emails sent to the full staff on key issues or updates.
  • Write crisis communications responses, talking points, and messaging, ensuring clarity and transparency while maintaining the organization's reputation.
  • Work closely with the Office of the President to get ahead of upcoming needs and opportunities, prioritizing effectively and creating content efficiently.

Requirements

  • 12+ years of relevant experience, including demonstrated experience as a speechwriter for high-profile executives or elected officials.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with a keen ability to convey complex issues in a clear and compelling manner, preferably with some experience in legal and/or reproductive rights topics.
  • Experience working with an organization with global reach, preferably in a non-profit environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, or a related field.
  • Crisis communications and reputational risk experience preferred.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, meet tight deadlines, and adapt to a dynamic environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
  • Passionate about reproductive rights and social justice issues.
