About the position

Flagship Pioneering is seeking a talented AI/ML Engineer/Sr Engineer to join a new effort building state-of-the-art LLM-based capabilities for augmenting strategy & decision-making in drug development. This role involves leveraging technical and creative thinking to develop AI capabilities that are of high priority to Flagship and its companies, focusing on biomedical applications.

Responsibilities

• Leverage retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and agentic workflows to develop LLM-based pipelines for deployment in high-priority biomedical applications
• Work closely with biotech industry experts to develop and improve model performance
• Integrate diverse data sources in a scalable and streamlined way
• Utilize and develop prompt engineering strategies in the biomedical domain
• Present progress in regular research meetings, prepare reports, and present findings for stakeholders and leadership
• Interface and collaborate with other ML and data engineers
• Maintain strong familiarity with new ML developments and techniques

Requirements

• PhD or Master's degree in a computational field (machine learning, computer science, statistics, applied math, neuroscience, computational biology, physics, or similar)
• Strong publication record in ML research, especially in LLM research
• Demonstrated experience leveraging LLMs and vector databases in development environments
• Fluency in Python and standard ML tools and packages and libraries (e.g. PyTorch, TensorFlow, sklearn)
• Experience with version control software (e.g. Git) and AWS cloud computing
• Ability to take initiative and work independently
• Team oriented and collaborative
• Excellent analytical skills and ability to synthesize & communicate complex information rapidly and effectively

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with biomedical research
• Prior industry experience (3+ years)
• Familiarity with the drug development and approval process
