The Senior Application & Database Engineer at Mt. Hood Community College plays a crucial role in the IT Department's Application Support Team, focusing on analysis and application programming as a functional area technical expert. This position is responsible for overseeing database and application programming projects, as well as providing production support. The engineer will contribute to the analysis, design, and programming of enterprise database applications, ensuring that they meet the needs of the college's operational requirements. In this role, the engineer will serve as a product expert, responsible for the configuration, development, implementation, testing, and maintenance of designated enterprise applications and/or modules. Troubleshooting and resolving application and database issues will be a key part of the job, along with performing implementation, backup, and recovery of various database management systems. The engineer will implement solutions through business process changes and/or software solutions, which may involve both front-end and back-end modifications. Collaboration is essential, as the engineer will work closely with staff to identify system requirements and with management to determine the next steps, providing solution recommendations as necessary. Daily maintenance tasks will be tracked, and issues will be escalated appropriately. The engineer will also train and assist users during upgrades to system applications, plan and install software and database upgrades, and coordinate with software vendor resources to resolve system problems and implement enhancements. Additionally, the engineer will support designated users on specific applications and may work with network and web support teams to resolve cross-platform issues. This position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. The work environment is typically an office setting, with responsibilities that may include repetitive hand/wrist motions for data entry and keyboarding, as well as occasional lifting and moving of moderate-weight computing devices. The role may involve short notice deadlines, after-hours responsiveness, and frequent interruptions, requiring flexibility and adaptability.
