About the position

The Florida Department of State is seeking a Senior Architect/Design Manager to provide architectural advice and assistance within the Division of Historical Resources. This role involves offering technical assistance and consultation to local, state, and federal agencies, as well as private groups and individuals regarding the planning and execution of preservation, restoration, and rehabilitation projects. The Senior Architect/Design Manager will be responsible for reviewing architectural designs and construction documents to ensure that preservation planning adheres to sound preservation and design principles. This includes conducting reviews for various programs such as the state Historic Preservation Grants Program, federal Historic Preservation Tax Incentives program, and the Florida Main Street Program. In addition to reviewing grant applications and project documents, the Senior Architect/Design Manager will provide technical assistance to professional firms engaged in developing architectural and contract documents for preservation projects. This assistance encompasses reviewing architectural program development, design, preliminary cost estimates, and rehabilitation feasibility studies. The role also requires reviewing designs for non-historic facilities to ensure compatibility with historic properties and providing technical assistance to various agencies and groups involved in preservation efforts. The position requires travel to conduct site inspections and training sessions as needed, and the successful candidate will perform other related duties as required. A Level 2 criminal background check is a condition of employment, and candidates must provide fingerprints for this process. Responsibilities

  • Provide architectural advice and assistance within the Division of Historical Resources.
  • Offer technical assistance and consultation to local, state, and federal agencies regarding preservation, restoration, and rehabilitation projects.
  • Review architectural designs and construction documents to ensure sound preservation and design principles are followed.
  • Conduct reviews for the state Historic Preservation Grants Program, federal Historic Preservation Tax Incentives program, and Florida Main Street Program.
  • Review Historic Preservation Grant Program applications and present staff recommendations in public hearings.
  • Provide technical assistance to professional firms in developing architectural and contract documents for preservation projects.
  • Review designs for non-historic facilities for compatibility with historic properties.
  • Travel to conduct site inspections and trainings as needed.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Architecture.
  • A license to practice architecture in Florida under Chapter 481, Florida Statutes.
  • Knowledge of the International and Florida Building Codes and the ability to interpret them accurately.
  • Ability to develop cost estimates and interpret architectural and engineering documents.
  • Knowledge of construction methods and materials.
  • Ability to travel to conduct trainings and inspect construction projects.

Nice-to-haves

  • Minimum of four (4) years' experience working in the architecture and/or construction field.
  • Meets the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards for Historic Architecture.
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical architectural and construction recommendations to non-skilled personnel and project managers, both verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation.
  • Knowledge of the federal Historic Preservation Tax Incentives Program.
  • Experience using AutoCAD or Revit software.
  • Experience using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and ArcView software.
  • Knowledge of LEED standards and sustainability.
