About the position

The Senior Assistant Dean and Chief of Staff at the University of California, Merced, serves as a principal advisor to the Dean and other academic leaders, overseeing strategic planning and operational services for the School of Engineering. This role involves managing resources, developing policies, and ensuring adherence to budgetary guidelines while fostering collaboration across departments. The position is integral to achieving the Dean's goals and objectives, providing leadership in administrative operations, financial management, and personnel administration.

Responsibilities

  • Manage, plan, and administer administrative operations of the School of Engineering.
  • Develop strategic resource models for long-range planning.
  • Act as a focal point for complex issues confronting the School.
  • Collaborate with the Dean and other leaders on various projects.
  • Represent the Dean on major campus committees and influence policy development.
  • Oversee management of the school's resources, including IT, facilities, and student services.
  • Supervise the Director of Finance and Budget, managing all funds and budgets under the School of Engineering.
  • Ensure compliance with business policies and best practices in fiscal administration.
  • Manage academic and staff personnel to maintain appropriate staffing levels.
  • Develop and implement organizational strategies for high-quality support.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Economics, Finance, or related area; or an advanced degree in Education equivalent to an MBA (preferred).
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience in administrative operations, strategy, or public administration.
  • Advanced skills in strategy development and change management.
  • Excellent leadership abilities to oversee multiple functions or departments.
  • Advanced knowledge of administrative management theory and practice.
  • Excellent collaborative and persuasive skills in sensitive situations.
  • Advanced project management skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced degree in a related field (preferred).
  • Experience in higher education administration.
