About the position

The employee in this position will serve as the Senior Assistant Resident Engineer in the Resident Engineer's Office located in Whittier, NC. The employee in this position is responsible for minor and/or major construction projects, supervising employees, and preparing and evaluating the performance of employees. The employee in this position must be proficient at plan reading, highway engineering calculations, and the survey instruments necessary to supervise the stake-out of line grade for roadways and structures. Duties of the position include preparation of monthly estimates, final estimates, and written and oral communication with contractors, inspection personnel, utility companies, and the public to ensure compliance with contract plans, standards, and specifications. This employee will also evaluate data collected by field personnel and prepare technical letters and reports, review contract plans, specifications, and materials testing results. The employee in this position requires minimal supervision from the Resident Engineer. Employee in this position will be expected to operate a state vehicle.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Senior Assistant Resident Engineer in the Resident Engineer's Office.
  • Responsible for minor and/or major construction projects.
  • Supervise employees and prepare/evaluate their performance.
  • Prepare monthly and final estimates.
  • Communicate with contractors, inspection personnel, utility companies, and the public.
  • Ensure compliance with contract plans, standards, and specifications.
  • Evaluate data collected by field personnel and prepare technical letters and reports.
  • Review contract plans, specifications, and materials testing results.
  • Operate a state vehicle.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution.
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in engineering; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of contract administration to ensure projects are constructed in accordance with specifications, standard drawings, and policies.
  • Customer service experience related to resolving problems involving engineering concepts.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand, explain, and administer highway contract construction projects.
  • Experience interpreting construction plans, provisions, specifications, policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Experience training, planning, coordinating, and supervising the work of other employees.

Nice-to-haves

  • Registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
