About the position

The Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Development at the University of Pennsylvania plays a pivotal role in overseeing the Pottruck Center for Student-Athlete Success, the Penn Athletics Wharton Leadership Academy (PAWLA), and mental health initiatives within the Division of Recreation and Intercollegiate Athletics (DRIA). This position is responsible for setting the vision and strategic plan for all academic support services, which includes assigning sports and schools to staff, serving as the academic services contact for select sports, and acting as the primary liaison for coaches, staff, faculty, and academic advisors. The Senior Associate Athletic Director will also manage and supervise head coaches and staff, oversee coaching contracts, team management, budgets, schedules, and fundraising efforts, while setting performance expectations for the staff involved. In addition to academic services, the Senior Associate Athletic Director will collaborate closely with Penn Career Services to establish vision and goals for life skills and professional development, managing the relationship with the Penn Champions Club regarding the alumni mentoring program for all 33 sports. This role also involves working with a DEIB professional within DRIA to support the Quaker Forward Committee's initiatives, assisting in the design and implementation of DEIB integration into PAWLA and the Center for Student-Athlete Success (CSAS). The Senior Associate Athletic Director will be responsible for developing and executing PAWLA programming, collaborating with DRIA and Wharton staff to create a curriculum, and ensuring a cohesive language is developed for student-athletes, coaches, and staff. Management responsibilities include supervising four full-time administrative staff members and five head coaches, conducting performance reviews, making hiring and merit decisions, and overseeing the budgets for CSAS, PAWLA, mental health, and intercollegiate programs. The Senior Associate Athletic Director will also create a funding plan for potential expansion of mental health support staff, ensuring that the mental health needs of student-athletes are adequately addressed. This comprehensive role is essential for the smooth operation and success of Penn Athletics programs, ensuring that student-athletes receive the support they need to excel both academically and athletically.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Pottruck Center for Student-Athlete Success and the Penn Athletics Wharton Leadership Academy (PAWLA).
  • Set the vision and plan for all academic support services and assign sports/schools to staff.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for coaches, staff, faculty, and academic advisors.
  • Manage and supervise head coaches and staff, overseeing coaching contracts, team management, budgets, schedules, and fundraising efforts.
  • Collaborate with Penn Career Services to set vision and goals for life skills and professional development.
  • Assist in designing and implementing DEIB integration into PAWLA and CSAS.

Requirements

  • A Master's Degree or more, and 7 to 10 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Previous supervisory experience required.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Strong computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office and Excel.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays, as required.
