About the position

The Senior Associate Dean of Students & Director of Operations and Administration at Bates College serves as a strategic partner to the Dean of Students, engaging in a variety of projects and initiatives that span across Student Affairs and the college. This role is pivotal in overseeing Student Affairs strategic initiatives, focusing on operations, administration, and finance, all through a student-centered lens aimed at improving departmental operations to support equitable processes and high-impact outcomes. The Senior Associate Dean is responsible for overseeing key areas including Campus Safety, Access Control, Student Affairs Technology, and Transportation, and provides direct supervision and mentorship to several managerial positions, leading a staff of approximately 30 individuals. This position reports directly to the Dean of Students. In terms of operations and administration, the Senior Associate Dean works closely with the Dean of Students to conduct gap analyses and benchmarking to identify needs, define strategic priorities for the Student Affairs division, and develop objectives that align with institutional goals. This includes preparing executive presentations, documentation, reports, and communications that address operational needs, policies, and regulatory compliance. The role also involves managing the divisional budget, collaborating with Human Resources on organizational design, and ensuring effective employee recruitment, retention, and engagement. The Senior Associate Dean sets the mission and values for Campus Safety, working in partnership with the Director of Campus Safety to develop a safety model that fosters community engagement and trust. This includes regular reviews and updates of Campus Safety policies and ensuring compliance with accreditation requirements. Additionally, the role encompasses overseeing the planning and implementation of transportation programs and managing interdepartmental charges related to Access Control and Campus Safety. In the realm of Information Technology and Operations, the Senior Associate Dean oversees the implementation of Student Affairs-specific software solutions, identifies operational gaps where technology can enhance user experience, and collaborates with technology users across the division to support faculty, staff, and students effectively. The position also involves participation in professional development opportunities to ensure the implementation of best practices in student life and serving as a Student Support Advisor during emergencies.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a strategic partner to the Dean of Students on various projects and initiatives.
  • Oversee Campus Safety, Access Control, Student Affairs Technology, and Transportation.
  • Provide direct supervision and mentorship to managerial staff and lead a team of approximately 30 individuals.
  • Conduct gap analysis and benchmarking to identify needs and define strategic priorities for Student Affairs.
  • Prepare executive presentations, documentation, reports, and communications related to operations and compliance.
  • Manage the divisional budget and collaborate with the Dean of Students on budget priorities.
  • Maintain a partnership with Human Resources for organizational design and employee engagement.
  • Set the mission and values for Campus Safety and develop a community engagement model.
  • Regularly review and update Campus Safety policies and ensure compliance with accreditation requirements.
  • Oversee the planning and implementation of transportation programs and manage interdepartmental charges.
  • Lead the Access Control Project team and collaborate on security initiatives.
  • Identify gaps in Student Affairs operations where technology can improve efficiency and user experience.
  • Create a strategic plan for technology solutions that support student success and well-being.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities related to student life and serve as a Student Support Advisor.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in a related field (Education, Business, Public Administration) required.
  • 7+ years of professional experience in higher education.
  • 3+ years of supervisory experience, preferably in a department.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing, implementing, and assessing large-scale programs.
  • Experience supervising professional staff members and systems design.
  • Experience with budgeting and providing direction for assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Ability to design effective communication tools for diverse constituencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to support underrepresented populations and identities.
  • Familiarity with the academic environment and higher education, preferably liberal arts.
