About the position
The Senior Attorney position at The Nature Conservancy (TNC) focuses on providing legal services primarily for the California Chapter and potentially other state chapters in the western United States. The role involves managing complex legal matters to support TNC's conservation priorities, ensuring that all transactions and activities align with the organization's mission and legal standards. The attorney will work closely with project staff and senior management to facilitate conservation strategies, including land acquisitions and compliance matters.
Responsibilities
- Provide legal services on complex matters to advance TNC's priorities.
- Ensure transactions and activities are legally sound and consistent with TNC's mission and policies.
- Articulate complex legal concepts and options to assigned programs.
- Work with state chapter project staff and senior management on conservation strategies.
- Conduct conservation land acquisitions and support compliance and land use matters.
- Advise and negotiate on public and private funding arrangements.
- Implement restoration projects and other conservation programs.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
- Active bar membership in a relevant state jurisdiction.
- Experience in environmental law, land use, or related fields.
- Strong negotiation and communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with conservation easements and land transactions.
- Familiarity with public and private funding mechanisms for conservation projects.
- Knowledge of California environmental laws and regulations.
