About the position

The Emancipator is seeking a Senior Audience Engagement Editor who will play a pivotal role in fostering loyalty, engagement, and affinity towards the publication. This position is designed for a driven and nimble collaborator who will focus on cross-platform audience engagement and brand growth. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated and innovative thought leader, responsible for developing strategies that resonate with both digital and in-real-life (IRL) communities. The Senior Audience Engagement Editor will be tasked with targeting audiences effectively and producing content that enhances the publication's impact and reach. In this role, the candidate will leverage strong journalism fundamentals, coupled with a passion for understanding and reaching audiences where they are. The position requires a strategic mindset, creative thinking, and entrepreneurial skills to succeed. Attention to detail is crucial, as the editor will need to distill and illustrate complex issues and themes effectively. The Senior Audience Engagement Editor will manage the social media producer and lead the social strategy, ensuring that the publication's voice is consistent and engaging across all platforms. The Emancipator, a digital magazine housed within the Center for Antiracist Research, aims to reimagine the first abolitionist newspapers in the United States. The publication centers critical voices and debates to reframe the national conversation on racial equity and promote racially just outcomes. The editor will be central to creating an inclusive and joyful culture that embodies the mission of this startup, focusing on long-term impact rather than short-term gains. This is a unique opportunity to develop a new digital property's audience strategy from the ground up, bringing innovative ideas to life cohesively across various platforms and in the community.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement audience engagement strategies across digital and IRL platforms.
  • Manage the social media producer and lead social strategy efforts.
  • Analyze reader metrics and data sets to identify opportunities for audience growth.
  • Collaborate with reporters, editors, and producers to enhance storytelling and distribution efforts.
  • Lead nontraditional distribution efforts to reach diverse audiences through various formats including audio and social media.
  • Create a culture of inclusivity and joy within the team, aligning with the mission of The Emancipator.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of engagement strategies and adjust as necessary.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
  • 8+ years of related experience in audience engagement or journalism.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret reader metrics and complex data sets.
  • Experience in developing and executing audience engagement strategies.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a focus on teamwork.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, startup environment with flexible hours.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with nontraditional media formats such as audio and video.
  • Familiarity with racial equity issues and a commitment to social justice.
  • Previous experience in a digital publication or media startup.
