About the position

Ethicon, a member of Johnson & Johnson's Family of Companies, is currently seeking an Automation and Controls Engineer to join the Ethicon Georgia Campus Technical Operations team. This position is pivotal in ensuring the design, installation, and qualification of new manufacturing equipment, as well as the improvement and optimization of existing manufacturing systems. The Senior Automation Engineer will play a crucial role in supporting Suture Materials Manufacturing at the Ethicon MedTech facility located in Athens, Georgia. In this role, the engineer will be responsible for providing technical expertise to resolve manufacturing equipment and automation issues. The position requires collaboration with various plant functions and external vendors to design new manufacturing equipment or modify existing systems in compliance with regulatory, industry, and Johnson & Johnson standards. The engineer will effectively and safely manage projects to meet business objectives, which include quality, financial, environmental health and safety (EH&S), and performance goals. Additionally, the Senior Automation Engineer will plan, coordinate, and execute the qualification of new and/or improved manufacturing equipment and automation systems. This includes leading or supporting quality and safety investigations related to equipment, ensuring timely closure of corrective actions, and evaluating new technologies to enhance process safety, quality, reliability, and efficiency. The engineer will also prepare oral and written technical reports and project updates, coordinate training for personnel on equipment operation and maintenance, and analyze maintenance trends to support asset investment strategies. Furthermore, the engineer will be responsible for organizing and presenting Capital Appropriation Requests (CAR) for project scope and funding, while ensuring compliance with all Federal, State, local, and Company regulations, policies, and procedures. Adherence to Johnson & Johnson's environmental and safety policies and guidelines is also a critical aspect of this role, along with accountability to the company's Standards of Leadership, which emphasize customer focus, innovation, complexity management, and organizational and people development.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with other plant functions and external vendors to design new manufacturing equipment or modify existing manufacturing equipment in accordance with regulatory, industry, and J&J standards.
  • Effectively and safely manages projects to meet business objectives, including quality, financial, EH&S, and performance goals.
  • Plans, coordinates, and executes qualification of new and/or improved manufacturing equipment and automation systems.
  • Leads or supports quality and safety investigations related to equipment, achieving timely closure of corrective actions.
  • Evaluates new technologies to improve process safety, quality, reliability, and efficiency.
  • Prepares oral and written technical reports and project updates.
  • Coordinates training of personnel on equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Analyzes maintenance trends in area of responsibility to support asset investment strategy.
  • Organizes and presents Capital Appropriation Requests (CAR) for project scope and funding.
  • Responsible for ensuring personal and Company compliance with all Federal, State, local and Company regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Adheres to J&J environmental and safety policies and guidelines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience in automation and controls engineering within a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory standards and compliance in manufacturing processes.
  • Proven project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and technical expertise in manufacturing equipment and automation systems.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written, for effective reporting and training.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Suture Materials Manufacturing or similar medical device manufacturing processes.
  • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of advanced automation technologies and systems.
