About the position

The Senior Bridge Engineer at Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson (JMT) will be responsible for designing and managing bridge and transportation structure projects of varying complexity. This role involves ensuring compliance with AASHTO, VDOT, and client specifications, preparing and reviewing plans, conducting inspections, and developing cost estimates. The position is integral to the growth of the Richmond office and requires a motivated individual ready to take on increasing responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, schedule, conduct or coordinate detailed phases of the engineering work in a part of a major project or in a total project of moderate scope
  • Analyze survey reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, aerial photography and other topographical or geologic data to plan projects
  • Perform design computations
  • Design projects in accordance with client specifications and guidelines, using design software and drawing tools
  • Develop construction cost estimates
  • Assist in the preparation of engineering documents for advertisement and construction
  • Prepare and compile contract plans, specifications and estimates
  • Manage project sub-consultants and in-house support disciplines
  • Develop extra work order requests and open-end contract task proposals
  • Prepare proposals as required
  • Attend meetings with clients
  • Coordinate with internal team members to ensure project completion by the defined deadline and established quality

Requirements

  • Ability to analyze statically determinate and indeterminate structures and bridges
  • Knowledge of structural design principles for steel, reinforced concrete, and prestressed concrete for both superstructure and substructure components
  • Familiarity with practices and procedures for structural detailing
  • Experience with construction cost estimating
  • Ability to work on multiple projects in a dynamic, fast-paced team oriented environment
  • Assist in the preparation of plan and specification documents for advertisement and construction
  • Coordinate with design team to ensure project completion within defined schedule, budget, and quality
  • Experience in using structural analysis and design software, MicroStation drafting software
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software including WORD and EXCEL
  • Ability to write, speak, and communicate clearly
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from ABET accredited engineering program
  • Virginia PE license
  • 10+ years of experience in the design of highway bridges and structures

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in performing in-service bridge safety inspections
  • Master's Degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in structures
