About the position

The Senior Budget Analyst position at Montclair State University is a critical role that reports directly to the Assistant Vice President for Budget and Planning. This position is responsible for assisting with all aspects of the budget process and budget management. The Senior Budget Analyst will gather, analyze, and present financial and statistical data related to various analytical projects, while also maintaining the university's budget policies, systems, and procedures. In this role, the Senior Budget Analyst will assist in the development and monitoring of the university's annual operating budget. They will serve as a liaison between the Budget Office and specific academic and administrative units of the university, providing essential budget analyses and forecasts that aid leadership in decision-making processes. The analyst will also assist in developing personnel and fringe budgets, as well as long-range financial projections that may include auxiliary services, financial aid, state funding allocations, and faculty teaching loads, among others. The position requires the use of various data systems and spreadsheets to analyze student enrollment, personnel headcount, and other statistical data that impact the university's financials. The Senior Budget Analyst will utilize the university's financial system to create or approve budget journals and transfers, and will also assist in the development of budgeting and reporting software used by the Budget & Planning department. Collaboration with partners in Finance & Treasury, Facilities, and other administrative departments is essential to address areas of shared interest. The analyst will uphold and support existing university policies and procedures while making recommendations to enhance business practices. Additionally, they may serve on ad hoc committees and task forces as assigned, and perform other duties as required by management.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the development and monitoring of the University's annual operating budget.
  • Serve as Budget Office liaison to specific academic and administrative units of the University as assigned.
  • Provide budget analyses and forecasts for leadership decision making and for internal and external audiences.
  • Assist with the development of personnel and fringe budgets.
  • Assist with long-range financial projections potentially including, but not limited to, auxiliary services, financial aid, state funding allocations, faculty teaching load, and others.
  • Use a variety of data systems and spreadsheets to analyze student enrollment, personnel headcount and other statistical data that impact financials.
  • Use the University's financial system to create or approve budget journals and transfers.
  • Assist with the development of budgeting and reporting software used by Budget & Planning.
  • Work with partners in Finance & Treasury, Facilities, and other administrative departments on areas of shared interest.
  • Uphold and support existing University policies and procedures and make recommendations that enhance its business practices.
  • Serve on ad hoc committees and task forces, etc., as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting, Finance or related field.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in a budget, finance, or related analytical role.
  • Knowledge of basic budget analysis techniques.
  • Advanced Excel skills.
  • Experience with computer systems for finance and budgeting.
  • Ability to communicate financial concepts to a variety of employees in the University.
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines and learn new systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university in related field.
  • Experience working in a university or large non-profit setting.
  • Knowledge of Workday Financials.
