About the position

The Senior Case Manager at Columbia University plays a crucial role in the Disability Services Case Management Team, reporting to the Associate Director for Case Management. This position is responsible for providing strategies, interventions, and advocacy for students with disabilities, ensuring accessibility and inclusion within the academic environment. The Senior Case Manager will work autonomously to manage a large caseload, develop comprehensive accommodation plans, and collaborate with faculty and university partners to remove barriers to learning.

Responsibilities

  • Manage academic accommodations for students registered with Disability Services according to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive disability case management strategies for students with significant disabilities requiring intensive assistance.
  • Review sensitive disability documentation to determine eligibility for accommodations.
  • Provide one-on-one consultations with students regarding academic accommodations and university policies.
  • Educate students on compensatory strategies such as study skills and self-advocacy.
  • Advise students on disclosure, accommodation concerns, and grievance processes.
  • Document meeting notes and maintain accurate electronic student records.
  • Consult on disability issues and liaise with university departments to facilitate services for students with disabilities.
  • Issue accommodation letters according to departmental procedures.
  • Provide guidance and referrals for non-identified students regarding self-perceived disabilities.
  • Participate in case management meetings to discuss complex cases.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Counselor Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Special Education, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 4 years of related experience.
  • Knowledge of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, ADA, and state regulations regarding services for students with disabilities.
  • Expertise in evaluating disability documentation and determining eligibility for services.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Sensitivity and understanding of working with students from diverse backgrounds and disabilities.
  • Ability to interact effectively with a broad range of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment on sensitive issues.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality with sensitive university data.
  • Capacity to handle a high-volume workload and manage multiple demands.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Counselor Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Special Education, or a closely related field.
