About the position

Sargent & Lundy is seeking a Senior Chemical Engineer specializing in Carbon Capture Technology to join our Energy & Industrial Group (EIG) in Chicago, Illinois. This position offers a unique opportunity to work on industry-leading projects that focus on power generation, plant design, environmental compliance, and multi-disciplined industrial projects. Our EIG teams are at the forefront of decarbonizing the industry by leveraging advanced technologies in renewable energy, carbon capture, and hydrogen power. We are recognized as the industry leader in carbon capture technologies, with extensive experience executing projects ranging from pilot-scale to commercial-scale for utilities, industrial plants, and direct air capture systems. Additionally, we provide engineering services for green hydrogen production through electrolysis, utilizing various power sources such as solar, wind, hydro, and nuclear energy. In this role, you will have the opportunity to expand your knowledge of engineering and environmental systems while leading multi-disciplined project teams. Your responsibilities will include evaluating and reviewing the design of carbon capture projects, focusing on process design and performance. You will analyze technical issues, oversee the preparation of system specification data, and present findings to clients and peers. Furthermore, you will independently verify the design of vendor-supplied equipment and contribute to complex technical reports. You will also support the Carbon Capture Development team in ensuring consistency and oversight across all carbon capture projects, engaging in project development activities for both privately and publicly funded initiatives. The position requires you to establish daily work priorities for multiple projects and respond to requests from supervisors and project managers. You will maintain and enhance your knowledge of industry standards, system design, and new technology developments while participating in peer-learning and knowledge sharing with other engineers. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to participate in industry code committees and conferences, furthering your professional development and contributing to the advancement of carbon capture technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and review the design of carbon capture projects for the energy and industrial markets with a special focus on process design and performance.
  • Analyze technical issues and oversee the preparation of system specification data, mass and heat balances, and presentations of findings to clients and peers.
  • Independently verify the design of vendor-supplied equipment.
  • Review and contribute to complex technical reports and presentations of findings to clients and peers.
  • Support the Carbon Capture Development team in providing consistency and oversight across S&L's carbon capture projects.
  • Engage in project development activities for privately and publicly funded carbon capture projects, including consulting on strategy both internally and externally, developing proposals, and coordinating with other project participants.
  • Establish work priorities on a daily basis for multiple projects and respond to requests from your supervisor and project managers.
  • Maintain and enhance your knowledge and understanding of industry standards and specifications, system design, and new technology developments.
  • Participate in industry code committees and conferences.

Requirements

  • BS in Chemical Engineering from an ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission-approved program with a strong academic background.
  • Ten or more years of experience in carbon capture or a related field in power or industrial sectors.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to interact and multitask with project team members and clients.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and coordinate various inputs between the internal engineering team and clients.
  • Ability to provide guidance to younger staff members.

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional Engineer or successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and designation as an Engineer-in-Training.
  • Familiarity with major federal environmental regulatory programs such as the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.
