About the position

At ExxonMobil, we are seeking a Senior Chemical Process Engineer to join our team at the Gulf Coast Growth Ventures site in Corpus Christi, TX. This role is pivotal in supporting Ethylene Glycol and Polyethylene technology, where you will be responsible for leading improvements in safety, production, and reliability within our plants. As a Senior Chemical Process Engineer, you will serve as a senior technical resource, providing expertise to address complex processes across various business teams. Your strategic thinking and collaborative approach will be essential in executing thoughtful solutions in a dynamic team environment. In this position, you will mentor less experienced engineers, provide off-hours support for abnormal operations, and aid in the development of long-term visions for product line improvements. You will also organize and design plant testing and product trials, influence others towards solutions, and work closely with other engineering disciplines and operations personnel. Your role will involve interfacing with third-party vendors to optimize costs and develop solutions, as well as leading Hazard and Operability Reviews (HAZOPs) and Risk Assessments to ensure process safety. Additionally, you will support capital projects aimed at driving margin or mitigating SHE risks and assist in field operations during plant startups, shutdowns, or upsets. This position requires a strong commitment to safety and operational excellence, as you will be expected to demonstrate courage in driving healthy tension between business teams and corporate technology support to achieve fit-for-purpose outcomes. Your contributions will be vital in enhancing the operational performance of our facilities and ensuring that we meet our strategic objectives in a safe and efficient manner.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the technical leader on the business team.
  • Mentor less experienced engineers on design practices, unit health monitoring, and troubleshooting.
  • Provide off-hours support of abnormal and non-routine operations, including unit Turnarounds.
  • Aid in the development of long-term vision and strategy for product line improvements.
  • Organize and design plant testing and product trials.
  • Set clear objectives and ensure priorities are aligned for the technical team.
  • Influence others and drive toward solutions without direct authority.
  • Work in a team environment with other engineering disciplines, operations, and mechanical personnel.
  • Interface with corporate technology support and 3rd party vendors for cost optimizations and solution development.
  • Lead Hazard and Operability Reviews (HAZOPs) and Risk Assessments, developing closure plans for identified risks.
  • Lead/support incident investigations as technical lead.
  • Provide support for developing and implementing various capital projects to drive margin or mitigate SHE risk.
  • Assist in the field during plant startups, shutdowns, or upsets.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Chemical Engineering.
  • 10+ years of experience in fuels/chemicals manufacturing roles, specifically with exposure to Ethylene glycol / Ethylene/ Polyethylene/ Utilities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Process design experience.
  • Familiarity with advanced control strategies/optimization software.
  • Working knowledge of RBI practices (corrosion damage mechanisms/mitigations, saltation, etc.).
  • Risk assessment and HAZOP experience.
  • Understanding of safety relief limits (modelling and evaluations).
  • Demonstrated understanding of modelling software (PROII, ASPEN, etc.).
  • Kinetic Modelling (SOL, KBC Profimatics, etc.).
