About the position

A Senior Civil Engineer II will be responsible for performing and directing civil engineering duties on multi-discipline building design projects of moderate to large scope, as well as projects that involve only civil engineering. This role encompasses a variety of responsibilities, including performing civil engineering duties such as analysis and design involving utilities, roadways, site grading, stormwater management, erosion control, and site plan preparation. The Senior Civil Engineer will supervise and direct the work of Civil Engineers and EI/EIT's assigned to the project, ensuring effective coordination with other design disciplines, managing the production of contract documents, and satisfying project budget and schedule requirements. In addition to leading several projects of moderate complexity and scope, the Senior Civil Engineer will meet with clients to prepare and validate proposed scope of services. They will manage the civil portion of multi-discipline projects, working closely with assigned Project Managers to meet project budget, schedule, goals, and objectives. Effective communication is essential, as the Senior Civil Engineer will coordinate, supervise, and communicate all aspects of the civil design within multi-discipline teams to ensure proper integration of civil design details with other disciplines. They will also communicate with contractors on Design-Build projects to verify the suitability of systems and materials selected. The role includes managing and supervising civil support services associated with the bidding process, preparing addenda and amendments, and overseeing the construction phase, which involves field visits, answering RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and preparing record drawings. Ensuring staff compliance with quality control policies and procedures is a critical aspect of this position. The Senior Civil Engineer will work closely with Managing Principals, Project Managers, Design Managers, Operations Directors, and senior management, assisting in presenting projects to various stakeholders throughout all stages of the project. Additionally, they will actively support company marketing and business development activities, establish and maintain positive client relationships, provide technical guidance to Civil staff, and mentor and monitor the professional development of Civil staff.

Responsibilities

  • Perform civil engineering duties including analysis and design involving utilities, roadways, site grading, stormwater management, erosion control, and site plan preparation.
  • Supervise and direct the work of Civil Engineers and EI/EIT's assigned to the project.
  • Coordinate with other design disciplines and manage the production of contract documents.
  • Lead several projects of moderate complexity and scope as required by schedule and resource constraints.
  • Meet with clients to prepare and validate proposed scope of services.
  • Manage the Civil portion of multi-discipline projects and work with Project Managers to meet project budget, schedule, goals, and objectives.
  • Coordinate, supervise, and communicate all aspects of the Civil design within multi-discipline teams.
  • Communicate with the Contractor on Design-Build projects to verify suitability of systems and materials selected.
  • Manage and supervise Civil support services associated with the bidding process, including preparing addenda and amendments and opening and tabulating bids.
  • Manage and supervise Civil support services associated with the construction phase, including field visits, answering RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and preparing record drawings.
  • Ensure staff compliance with quality control policies and procedures.
  • Work with and take direction from Managing Principals, Project Managers, Design Managers, Operations Directors, and senior management.
  • Assist in presenting projects to clients, contractors, project team members, Authorities Having Jurisdiction, and members of the public.
  • Support Company marketing and business development activities.
  • Establish and maintain positive client relationships.
  • Provide technical guidance to Civil staff.
  • Mentor and monitor the professional development of Civil staff.
  • Assist Department Director and Department Head in developing new and/or revised processes and procedures.
  • Represent the Department Head when unavailable.
  • Lead staff training sessions.
  • Provide input to Department Head on staff annual performance reviews.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an ABET-accredited 4-, 5-, or 6-year engineering program in Civil Engineering or related disciplines.
  • Post-graduate degree in Civil Engineering or related field may be given additional consideration.
  • 8-15 years or more of significant design and practice experience in a leadership role with a Civil Engineering firm or a multi-discipline Architectural & Engineering firm.
  • Experience with analysis and design involving utilities, roadways, site grading, stormwater management, erosion control, and site plan preparation is desirable.
  • Experience as a lead designer or Civil Engineer in federal, state, municipal, healthcare, commercial, higher education or similar projects is preferred.
  • Must be a fully licensed Engineer in at least one US state, preferably in the local jurisdiction.
  • Understanding of sustainable design principles and design practices with LEED AP accreditation preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Autocadd Civil 3D and stormwater modeling programs such as PCSWMM, Pondpack, and SewerGems.
  • Additional certifications such as CFM, CDT, CCS, or CCCA are encouraged.
  • Active participation in NSPE, ASCE or other related professional organizations is desirable.
