About the position

The Erie County Department of Public Works is seeking a Senior Civil Engineer to perform advanced professional engineering work. This position involves rendering opinions and making decisions on technical aspects of a wide variety of engineering subjects. The incumbent will be responsible for conducting field surveys to investigate and evaluate various engineering projects, ensuring that all work aligns with federal, state, and local guidelines. The role is performed under the general direction of a higher-level administrative employee, and the Senior Civil Engineer may supervise a number of engineering and technical personnel. This position is crucial for the planning and execution of engineering projects within the Highways Division, and it requires a strong understanding of civil engineering principles and practices. The Senior Civil Engineer will review and provide comments on specific engineering studies, direct and investigate the planning and layout of various engineering projects, and coordinate engineering studies with federal, state, and other agencies. Additionally, the engineer will assist in developing policies related to research and engineering for the department, interpret federal guidelines and requirements related to utility projects, and ensure compliance with necessary procedures and information to satisfy federal agencies. The role also includes preparing cost estimates for construction projects, directing the inspection of major construction projects, assigning and directing survey teams, supervising the preparation of right-of-way acquisition maps, and overseeing the design of highway and bridge projects.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Possession of a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering and five (5) years of civil engineering experience, at least one (1) year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity
  • Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and nine (9) years of civil engineering experience, at least one (1) year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B)
  • Possession of New York State Professional Engineer license within one (1) year of permanent appointment

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Civil Engineering (may substitute for one year of required civil engineering experience)
  • Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience (pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements)
