About the position

RESPEC is seeking a Senior Civil Engineer to join our team in Fairbanks, Alaska. As a Senior Civil Engineer, you will work directly with clients and collaborate with team members to design innovative solutions to diverse challenges in Alaska. Our Water design team is involved in a variety of projects related to water, wastewater, and drainage, overseeing the entire process from inception through planning, design, and support of construction efforts for both public and private sector clients. In this position, you will lead a team of civil engineers and engineers-in-training (EITs) in preparing professional work products. Your responsibilities will include the design of water and wastewater utilities, site grading, stormwater management, sediment and erosion control, and ensuring compliance with Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation permitting requirements. You will be expected to manage multiple projects simultaneously, proactively collaborating with team members and clients to resolve technical challenges that arise during the project lifecycle. As a Senior Civil Engineer, you will supervise, mentor, and guide project design development, providing technical reviews of project designs, plan drawings, engineering reports, technical specifications, and other contract deliverables to ensure feasibility, technical accuracy, and quality. You will also track project progress within established scopes, budgets, and schedules, alerting project managers of any issues that may affect project delivery. Additionally, you will support other market sectors on design projects as needed, prepare clear and concise written communications, and participate in client and team meetings. Presenting design projects as part of public outreach and conducting research to write technical portions of proposals will also be part of your role.

Responsibilities

  • Work on multiple projects simultaneously, proactively collaborating with team members and clients to resolve technical challenges.
  • Supervise, mentor, and guide project design development with project engineers, staff engineers, and interns.
  • Provide technical review of project designs, plan drawings, engineering reports, technical specifications, and other contract deliverables for feasibility, technical accuracy, and quality.
  • Track project progress within established project scopes, budgets, and schedules and alert project managers of any issues that may affect them.
  • Support other market sectors on design projects as workload dictates.
  • Prepare clear and concise written communications and participate in client and team meetings.
  • Present design projects, as required, as part of public outreach to clients and the public.
  • Conduct research and write technical portions of proposals to assist in bringing in new work.

Requirements

  • More than 10 years of experience in progressively responsible roles working on a broad range of water and wastewater projects for private- and public-sector clients.
  • Proven expertise and leadership abilities in civil engineering design services.
  • Strong technical skills in water and wastewater utility design, site grading, stormwater management, and sediment and erosion control.
  • Experience with Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation permitting processes.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in public outreach and client presentations.
  • Familiarity with project management software and tools.
  • Knowledge of local regulations and standards related to civil engineering in Alaska.
