About the position

WSP is currently seeking a Senior Civil Engineer for our Buffalo, New York office, with consideration for candidates in New York City, Valhalla, and Troy. This role involves engaging with our Highway Transportation Team to contribute to a variety of infrastructure projects that meet client objectives and address their challenges. As a Senior Civil Engineer, you will provide technical assistance and guidance for multi-site and multi-phase projects, including due diligence, investigation, remediation, impact assessment, permitting, and construction. Your responsibilities will encompass the research, design, concept development, planning, and construction of various facilities such as roads, buildings, tunnels, dams, bridges, water supply systems, and sewage treatment facilities. In this position, you will substantiate reports and documentation regarding materials, installations, and construction specifications, ensuring that all responsibilities are delivered with a quality that meets or exceeds industry standards for design, safety, and functionality. You will determine effective methods for collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from various sources, including physical work sites, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, and hydrologic analysis, to support project development and construction. Your role will also involve performing professional civil engineering work, conducting research and inspections of site conditions, and ensuring compliance with applicable rules, standards, and permits. You will develop construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates, while preparing safety and phasing plans that require coordination with various stakeholders. Additionally, you will work collaboratively with a cross-functional team of engineers, planners, and scientific professionals to execute project work on multiple concurrent projects, ensuring that all work conforms to specifications and regulatory requirements. As a Senior Civil Engineer, you will prepare technical reports and presentations to communicate research findings and recommendations, assist in the analysis and interpretation of data from field investigations, and prepare site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs). You will interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a professional manner, while remaining current with the latest civil engineering techniques and practices. This position requires responsible decision-making regarding company resources and adherence to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical assistance and guidance for multi-site/phase due diligence, investigation, remediation, impact assessment, permitting, improvement, and construction of infrastructure projects.
  • Assist with the research, design, concept development, planning, and construction of facilities, roads, buildings, tunnels, dams, bridges, water supply systems, and sewage treatment.
  • Substantiate reports and documentation regarding material, installations, and construction specifications.
  • Determine methods for collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from various sources for project development, design, and construction.
  • Perform professional civil engineering work and conduct research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions.
  • Develop construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates; prepare construction safety and phasing plans.
  • Develop or incorporate advanced modeling techniques and design requirements to ensure safety and functionality.
  • Work as part of a cross-functional team to execute project work on multiple concurrent projects.
  • Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, and reports for interpretation or presentation of data.
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate measurements and reporting.
  • Assist with development and scoping of medium-sized projects.
  • Provide guidance and training to entry-level engineers.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations explaining research findings and recommendations.
  • Assist in the analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of data obtained during field investigations.
  • Prepare and implement site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
  • Comply with regulatory requirements pertaining to data integrity and documentation.
  • Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a professional manner.
  • Remain current in latest civil engineering techniques and practices.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company resources.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or closely related discipline.
  • 5+ years of relevant post-education experience in engineering and prior civil design experience.
  • A New York State Professional Engineers license or the ability to obtain one is required.
  • Proficient knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices, and design/build applications.
  • Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management.
  • Working knowledge of reducing hazardous substances and greenhouse gas generation.
  • Knowledge of civil construction laws, codes, regulations, and compliance practices.
  • Ability to make technical computations and calculations applying engineering principles.
  • Project management experience with small to mid-level projects.
  • Ability to plan and conduct inspections and investigations on construction and design aspects.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with diverse audiences.
  • Highly capable self-leadership with attention to detail and multi-tasking abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and provide guidance to junior team members.
  • Proficiency with technical writing and discipline-specific design software.
