About the position

The Senior Civil Engineer at SMUD will provide senior-level technical expertise in civil, structural, and architectural designs for new construction and modifications of transmission, distribution, and non-nuclear operating facilities. This role is crucial in supporting the siting, permitting, design, interconnection, construction, and commissioning of renewable energy projects, including solar, wind, and battery energy storage. The ideal candidate will possess strong project management and leadership skills, with a passion for renewable energy development and the ability to navigate a highly regulated environment.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate, oversee, and prepare complex civil, structural, and architectural designs for new construction and modifications of SMUD's facilities.
  • Prepare civil and structural design plans, specifications, and schedules to ensure structural integrity.
  • Perform technical reviews of civil design and construction documents to assure quality output.
  • Prepare engineering bid packages and proposals for construction contracts and professional services.
  • Develop project work plans and schedules, directing the work of contracted architects and engineers.
  • Analyze design and construction project alternatives, preparing schedules, estimates, and cost/benefit analyses.
  • Apply professional engineering stamp to designs, calculations, reports, and drawings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • 5 to 7 years of progressively responsible experience in the design and construction of electric transmission and distribution facilities.
  • Knowledge of project management methods and techniques, contract and budget administration, and civil/structural engineering design principles.

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional Registration in civil and/or structural engineering in California.
  • Experience in the electric utility industry, particularly with solar, wind, and battery energy storage systems.
  • Experience working with local, state, and federal agencies for renewable energy projects.
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to manage contracts and oversee civil engineering consultants.
