About the position

Ardelle Associates, a veteran-owned company specializing in consulting and support services for government agencies, is seeking a dedicated Senior Civil Paralegal to support the Department of Justice (DOJ), U.S. Attorney's Office (USAO) in Plano, TX. This position plays a crucial role in the Affirmative Civil Enforcement (ACE) Program, which is designed to protect the financial and program interests of the United States through civil litigation aimed at combating fraud, waste, and abuse, particularly in the healthcare sector. The ACE program at the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Texas focuses on investigating and prosecuting health care fraud matters, as well as taking a strong stance against illegal activities related to opioids and other controlled substances. As a Senior Civil Paralegal, you will be responsible for reviewing incoming materials and determining the appropriate processing steps independently. You will analyze and evaluate complaints and referrals regarding potential unlawful conduct, obtaining necessary information from relevant agencies and preparing legal documents for submission to the Assistant U.S. Attorney (AUSA). Your role will also involve analyzing and summarizing datasets and documents, including healthcare claims data and financial information, as well as identifying and interviewing potential witnesses, preparing written reports of these interviews. In addition, you will prepare responsive documents with minimal instructions from the AUSA, verify citations and legal authorities in legal documents, and develop tables of contents and indices for motions and briefs. You will assist in processing information gathered during investigations and discovery, maintain organized files, and manage the docketing of cases into the office's case management system. Your responsibilities will also include maintaining calendars for active cases, tracking important dates, and producing a variety of written documents using office software applications, ensuring accuracy and proper formatting throughout.

Responsibilities

  • Review incoming material and independently determine proper processing.
  • Analyze and evaluate complaints and referrals regarding potential unlawful conduct.
  • Obtain needed information from appropriate agencies and prepare and submit drafted legal documents to the appropriate AUSA.
  • Analyze and prepare summaries of datasets and documents, including healthcare claims data, opioid prescribing or dispensing data, and financial information.
  • Identify potential witnesses, interview or attend interviews of potential witnesses, and prepare written reports memorializing interviews.
  • Prepare responsive documents with limited instructions from the AUSA.
  • Verify citations and legal authorities contained in legal documents using original and online resources, ensuring completeness and consistency.
  • Develop tables of contents, tables of authorities, and indices to motions and briefs in accordance with established format.
  • Scan and help process information gathered in investigations and discovery in coordination with AUSA, providing discovery to opposing counsel.
  • Establish and maintain a variety of files, search legal reference files, and organize files and records material for disposition or transfer.
  • Responsible for docketing all cases for the assigned attorneys into the office's case management system (CaseView).
  • Search databases for required information as necessary, including reviewing documents in databases like Relativity and Eclipse.
  • Maintain calendars of assigned active cases, track filing and hearing dates, develop suspense systems, and provide reminders of commitments and court appearances to AUSAs.
  • Produce a variety of written documents and materials using a wide range of office software applications, ensuring proper format, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar.

Requirements

  • Extensive investigation and litigation support experience, including pre-complaint, pre-trial, during trial, and post-trial activities.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for significant organization of case files, discovery work, and motion support.
  • Proficiency in electronic databases for evidence organization and presentation.
  • Ability to handle imaging and media duplication tasks effectively.
  • Relevant experience of at least five years in pre-trial and trial litigation support.
  • Preferred educational background includes a certificate, associate's, or bachelor's degree in paralegal-related studies.
