About the position

AECOM is seeking a Senior Track Engineer to join our Chicago office. This is an exceptional opportunity to be involved with infrastructure transit/rail projects for our key clients in Chicago and the surrounding area, including CTA, Metra, and Amtrak. The successful candidate will demonstrate technical experience in track design and will work in a multidisciplinary engineering environment to provide design for light rail (LRT), heavy rail (HRT), commuter, freight, and streetcar/trolley systems. The role requires close collaboration with planning, civil/roadway, structural, and architectural design teams to ensure comprehensive project delivery. As a track design engineer, you will serve on projects of various scales, supporting track and civil discipline leads in major infrastructure projects. Your responsibilities will include performing quantity take-offs for all track corridor components, participating in technical specifications writing, and collaborating with other design disciplines. You will also provide support to project managers and serve as a task lead or deputy project manager (DPM) when necessary. This position is critical in ensuring that projects meet the required standards and specifications while maintaining effective communication with clients and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a track design engineer in projects of various scale
  • Supports track & civil discipline leads in major infrastructure projects
  • Performs quantity take-offs for all track corridor components (track and civil)
  • Participates in technical specifications writing
  • Collaborates with other design disciplines
  • Provides support to PM and DPM
  • Serves as Task lead or DPM

Requirements

  • BA/BS + 10 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education
  • PE license or equivalent licensure required or ability to obtain within 6 months
  • Master's Degree in Engineering or related field (preferred)
  • 5 years in design (preferred)
  • Strong skills in track alignment design and CADD skills in both the MicroStation and AutoCAD platforms (preferred)
  • Experience in AutoCAD Civil 3D and/or Bentley InRoads / OpenRoads / OpenRail (preferred)
  • Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and/or Bentley InRoads / OpenRoads / OpenRail (preferred)
  • Experience in working on CTA, Metra, Amtrak, BNSF and UPRR projects (preferred)
  • Working knowledge of design requirements for rail systems (e.g. traction power, catenary, signals) (preferred)
  • Working knowledge of track structure design principles and special trackwork details (preferred)
  • Experience with design and testing of ballast-less track forms (preferred)
  • Experience in construction, maintenance or inspection of track (preferred)
  • Ability to scope/estimate complex projects (preferred)
  • Track and manage task budgets and schedule (preferred)
  • Demonstrate leadership skills and communication skills requiring client interaction (preferred)
  • Ability to work with various multi-disciplined teams is essential to this role (preferred)
  • Provide in-depth Quality Control and Quality Assurance for design/project management/program management (preferred)
