About the position

The Senior Communications Architect at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is responsible for designing, implementing, managing, and optimizing communication systems within the organization. This role emphasizes a deep understanding of networking principles and extensive experience in Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technologies. The architect will ensure the reliability, scalability, and security of communication infrastructure, including telephone systems and cellular distributed antenna systems, while collaborating with various teams to integrate solutions with existing IT infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement comprehensive communication architectures that align with organizational goals.
  • Troubleshoot, optimize, and enhance network performance specifically for VoIP applications.
  • Lead the deployment and configuration of VoIP systems, including SIP trunking and PBX solutions.
  • Interface with DOE and other sites to ensure ORNL's communication needs are met via the DOE Telecommunications Prime contract.
  • Coordinate with ORNL end users and telecom carriers for dedicated data circuits and manage external circuits.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate communication solutions with existing IT infrastructure and applications.
  • Manage Cellular Distributed Antenna Systems, cellular contracts, radio frequency management, and ensure security and compliance.

Requirements

  • A BS in computer science, computer engineering, information technology, information systems, telecommunications, business, or a related field of study.
  • Eight (8) to twelve (12) years of aligned professional experience.
  • At least five (5) years of communications architecture experience focused on VoIP technologies.
  • Proficiency in VoIP protocols (SIP, RTP, etc.) and technologies.
  • In-depth knowledge of networking concepts (LAN/WAN, QoS, firewalls, etc.).
  • Experience with network monitoring tools and VoIP management software.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • CCNP and/or Avaya Certified Implementation Specialist certifications.
